How GitHub is building a transitional architecture to handle Git traffic at the scale of AI agents
GitHub is migrating its busiest repositories to Azure by serializing write arbitration from the entire repository down to individual references. This resolves throughput bottlenecks caused by cross-region round trips of approximately 25ms. Internal traffic tests show a 3–4x increase in write throughput for different references with lower latency. Currently, two out of five replicas for most repositories are located in Azure, which handles about half of the Git traffic.
