METR and Redwood Research audit OpenAI for three weeks, uncovering major gaps in internal AI behavior monitoring

Two researchers from METR and Redwood Research spent three weeks on-site at OpenAI from July 21 to August 11, auditing its internal monitoring system for anomalous model behavior. During this period, they had access to the codebase and internal documents and interviewed approximately 12 employees.
