Xiaomi open-sources a spatial audio model. How should smart home teams test sound localization?
Xiaomi’s MiDashengLM-Spatial repository explains that spatial reasoning depends on binaural audio retaining left-right differences.
What to consider
Xiaomi’s MiDashengLM-Spatial repository explains that spatial reasoning depends on binaural audio retaining left-right differences. Mono audio can be processed but lacks directional cues. It also describes channel-swap consistency checks. Application counts for the base model do not establish the spatial model’s accuracy on every home device.
First, clarify exactly what locations the device needs to distinguish.
Start from product tasks: clearly define which interaction step needs to change when determining location—for example, where the user expects the device to respond or where they expect a notification to originate. This scenario is a pilot design suggestion and does not indicate that the model has reached deliverable levels on these devices.
Provide expected answers and acceptable uncertain expressions for each sample. If users only need content recognition, prioritize getting that right; only validate spatial judgment separately if location affects subsequent responses, to avoid generating hard-to-explain outputs.
Compare performance under actual placement and acoustic conditions.
Use equipment arranged near the planned deployment location. Record where each sound originates, what other sounds are occurring simultaneously, and how the system finally responds. When changing conditions, keep all other arrangements unchanged to make it clear whether changes stem from content understanding, location judgment, or device interaction.
First, ensure judgment is observable before connecting it to actual operations.
Initially, display only what the model detects and whether location is clear, then let the user confirm if they wish to continue. Observe whether users can understand prompts and easily correct them, and whether subsequent tasks remain smooth after correction; these interaction results also impact product usability.
Check results with a fixed input
For a local evaluation, retain stereo audio with a known left-right source position and swap its channels. A left-or-right answer should reverse after the swap; unchanged content recognition alone does not pass a direction check. Add mono audio to check that direction is not invented. No audio was recorded or uploaded and the model was not run here.
