Skills versus MCP: combine task methods with external connections
Explain how Agent Skills package procedures and MCP connects tools and material, then check their combination against a single research task.
Choose an approach
A Skill can store a task method and resources; MCP standardizes connections from AI applications to external systems. Reading material through MCP may still require a Skill defining verification and output. A Skill does not mean an external account is connected. Identify methods and callable resources first; the two can work together.
Knowing the procedure does not establish a connection
The Agent Skills specification stores instructions in skill directories with optional scripts and references. MCP describes hosts, clients and servers providing tools and resources. The specifications address different needs and are not interchangeable plugins merely because both help an assistant finish tasks.
For example, a Skill may require comparing records from two dates while an MCP service supplies the records. Skill text must not assume all accounts contain the same data. Check discovery and execution results. Conversely, a working connection does not prove the assistant will interpret material by the intended method.
Check both roles within the same research task
Ask for a summary of public material under identical requirements. Confirm the connection returns required fields, then load the task method and verify the output actually uses them. Distinguish missing tool data from unapplied instructions instead of blaming insufficient Skill detail for every error.
Repeat with material lacking a date and require an explicit gap report. Check the environment and authorization for external commands in a Skill. A connection name is not proof of successful writing. No third-party service was installed here; this is a combined validation method.
Maintain technical interfaces and task content separately
Changes to MCP fields can affect retrieval, while outdated Skill formatting rules can affect output. Give each a traceable version and repeat the same task after upgrades. Diagnosing these changes separately is usually easier than putting every requirement in one long Skill file.
Before adopting either, check whether the assistant supports the relevant specification and execution method. A connection may serve several tasks and a Skill may use several tools, but configuration is still required. Compatibility labels are not proof of business completion; compare final output with original material.
