What is artificial general intelligence? Understanding AGI definitions and disputes

Distinguish AGI from specialized capability, compare definitional scope, and examine why demonstrations and rankings cannot establish generality or autonomy.

Understand the concept

AGI means artificial general intelligence and concerns systems capable across a broad range of tasks rather than one specialty. There is no single attainment criterion adopted by all researchers and institutions. Identify the definition and task scope before judging progress; a demonstration, model name, or individual benchmark score is insufficient.

01

Definitions use different scopes of capability

OpenAI’s Charter describes highly autonomous systems outperforming humans at most economically valuable work. Research on levels of AGI proposes dimensions including performance and generality. These formulations differ in purpose and scope and should be attributed rather than combined into a supposedly unified threshold.

Strong coding performance in a system unable to handle other tasks establishes only a checked specialty. A chatbot discussing many topics also does not demonstrate autonomous completion of all kinds of work. Distinguish answering broadly from performing real tasks.

02

Check cross-task performance and autonomy separately

A model can perform differently in writing and calculation, so report each task’s conditions. Reliance on a person for every next step differs from answer quality on one question. An automatic interface button does not establish the autonomy discussed in AGI definitions.

A demonstration with selected inputs or repeated retries that shows only successes cannot establish overall performance. Ask about failures and human intervention. When evidence is absent, preserve the unknown rather than imputing unseen capabilities.

03

Choose current products for concrete tasks

Users usually need to establish whether an assistant can organize documents or edit code, without first resolving philosophical disputes about AGI. State inputs and success criteria and inspect outputs for a reproducible conclusion. Success on one task is not evidence of universality.

This page reviews definitions and research frameworks without certifying a product as AGI or treating timelines as established facts. Look for task scope and external verification in claims. Different definitions can produce different conclusions; preserve that qualification when citing them.
