What is Claude Code? How Claude models participate in project development
How Anthropic Claude Code reads projects, edits files and executes commands, separating Claude models from the agent product and explaining interfaces and permissions.
Meet this tool
Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent product using Claude models for development tasks in codebases. It organizes file reading, editing and tool feedback into ongoing work rather than only chat advice. For a failed test, it can inspect implementation and run relevant commands. Actual execution depends on environment, authorization and task state.
The feedback loop from a failed test to code edits
Given a specific test failure, Claude Code can search code, inspect calls and edit files. Command results inform further investigation. The loop depends on tool feedback: a model saying tests passed does not establish a successful test process.
Claude names the underlying model family, while Claude Code supplies development tools and execution. Model settings affect reasoning and output, but dependencies, file scopes and tools affect results too. One chat-generated answer cannot establish reliable repository editing by the complete agent.
Interfaces beyond the terminal still need project context
The product supports terminals, editor integrations and other task interfaces. Different forms suit different workflows and need separate confirmation of context and execution location. A local repository does not automatically appear in every remote task because the account matches; environment preparation remains necessary.
A project CLAUDE.md can record test commands and architecture conventions, with applicable instructions read when sessions start. Automatic memory stores learned experience and has a different origin from handwritten rules. Distinguish conventions from historical experience instead of letting stale memory replace current code and dependencies.
Manage model configuration separately from tool permissions
Permissions distinguish operations and execution arrangements. Read access to a directory does not authorize external sharing or unrestricted system changes. Check actual policy rather than promise a confirmation popup for every action or full privileges after installation.
External-service eligibility differs from local permissions. A connected tool may still lack access to particular resources, and errors must remain available for subsequent decisions. Model selection, client entitlement and service access can impose separate conditions; an accessible interface does not establish universal model or resource access.
Compare with ordinary chat and other coding tools
Ordinary Claude chat suits explanation and discussion, while Claude Code works inside engineering environments. Compare coding products by editing experience, tool definitions and environment fit rather than assume one model name determines the best choice.
Verify patches, relevant tests and untested scope, especially unintended edits and dependency changes. This is an explanation of documented mechanisms, not a comparative repair benchmark. A small code-explanation task may need only clear chat rather than unnecessary write access.
