Understand the concept

Deep learning uses multilayer neural networks to learn patterns in data. Layers transform inputs into task-relevant representations, while training adjusts parameters to improve predictions. It is part of machine learning, but not all machine learning uses deep networks. Recognizing training photos does not establish performance on new environments; evaluate unseen examples and inspect recurring errors.

01

Layers let models learn nonlinear relationships

A linear model combines weighted inputs and may need engineered features for complex relationships. Deep networks add nonlinear transformations between layers and learn task-relevant representations. Deep refers mainly to architecture, not to a demonstrated depth of human-like understanding.

Depth is only one architectural property. A deep network can train poorly or memorize incidental training cues. Compare models on the same data and evaluation task instead of ranking them solely by layer count.

02

An image example should test background shortcuts

Suppose a model learns to identify damaged boxes from warehouse photos. If most damaged boxes sit on a red mat, the model may use the mat as a shortcut. Failure on an ordinary floor may reflect a confounded dataset rather than insufficient network depth.

Photograph the same intact box against different backgrounds and from different angles, then inspect prediction stability. This is a proposed check, not a reported test result. Verify the labels first so model errors can be separated from annotation mistakes.

03

Use unseen examples to decide whether to keep training

Falling training error without improvement on an independent test set suggests overfitting. Split photos by their real source and avoid placing crops of one image in both training and testing, where duplicated examples can inflate apparent performance.

For a simple task with clear rules, retain a rule-based or smaller-model baseline. Additional training resources are justified when the new model reduces important errors under realistic variation. Recheck after input conditions change; initial validation does not cover every future environment.
