Patches versus whole-file rewrites: preserve unrelated content
Compare local diffs with full replacements and assess base versions, patch checks and content loss in AI-assisted code changes.
Choose an approach
Prefer a reviewable local diff for a few identified changes. Whole-file output can fit regeneration, provided omissions are checked against the original. Patches can target the wrong place and rewrites can preserve behavior; scope and evidence matter. A patch label does not replace review, and concurrent edits must not be overwritten.
Applying a patch does not validate its behavior
Git diff describes changes; git apply processes patches using context and can check applicability first. Applicability does not prove business correctness or absence of uncommitted edits. Full replacements can introduce formatting churn or omit comments, so inspect the resulting diff. Identify sources for generated files and preserve unrelated content in maintained files. Record starting versions for either method to avoid applying valid changes to the wrong branch.
Compare resulting diffs for the same requested change
Use one base file and one requested condition change. Check workspace state first, inspect non-target changes afterward and run examples distinguishing old and new behavior. If a patch is rejected, reread the file and produce a new diff rather than forcing an overwrite. For rewrites, check imports, configuration and trailing content. Git diff supplies review material; tests and builds validate behavior. No real project modification was performed for this article.
Maintain recovery around collaboration and generation
With several collaborators, define file boundaries and recheck base versions before merging. Patches express local intent; rewrites may suit deterministic generated output when commands and inputs are preserved. Count omission checks and conflict resolution alongside output tokens. Retain a recoverable pre-change commit before acceptance. Separate or explain large unrelated formatting changes so behavior changes remain visible. Choose output formats for inspectable changes rather than producing complete files in one response.
