Full conversation history versus summaries: preserve details that need traceability
Compare resending full conversations with compacting history, identify information that summaries may lose and use earlier task details to check whether context remains usable.
Choose an approach
When later tasks require exact quotations or a review of earlier decisions, retain searchable original records. When only goals and key agreements are needed, consider a history summary. Summaries shorten input but may lose negative constraints or sources. A short summary can be combined with retrievable originals; the choice need not be permanently all-history or summary-only.
Saved conversation state does not make every request free
OpenAI’s conversation-state guide distinguishes ways to maintain request history, while input remains subject to the chosen model’s context limits. As a conversation grows, check what actually reaches the model. A service retaining the conversation does not mean every early detail fully contributes to the current answer.
Compaction implementations also differ. API compaction is not necessarily equivalent to a readable summary written by the application; support and retained information require checking the relevant interface documentation. Identify the method before comparing results rather than treating different demonstrations as the same mechanism.
Use earlier agreements to check for missing constraints
Take a permitted long conversation and place a necessary condition early in it, such as a file that must not change. Continue the same task using full history and a summary, then check whether subsequent actions obey it. Preserve the scope of decisions in the summary rather than replacing them with a vague goal.
Add a question requiring the original wording and check whether the summary-based approach can retrieve it instead of inventing a close paraphrase. Without retrieval, it should not handle exact quotations. This test identifies retained information; a shorter conversation does not itself demonstrate better answers.
Retain recoverable originals when updating summaries
Mark the conversation turn covered by a summary and update it when important agreements change. Keep original material accessible so an incorrect summary cannot overwrite the only record. Maintenance should address outdated agreements conflicting with new conditions rather than repeatedly shortening the summary.
Record input consumption and task completion before deciding whether compaction is worthwhile. Restarting with only necessary material can also serve as a comparison when old conversations contain irrelevant content. This article does not test any platform’s long-term memory; the proposed checks do not replace its context documentation.
