What is generative AI? How generation differs from retrieving information

Understand generative AI through email drafts and illustrations, distinguish it from classification and search, and learn what to verify before using the result.

Our take

Understand the concept

Generative AI produces content such as text or images from inputs. It learns patterns during training and uses prompts and context to generate results. That differs from classifying emails or merely copying a retrieved passage. Useful, fluent, or visually complete content is not automatically factual or cleared for use.

01

Generated outputs can use different media

Drafting an invitation from an event theme and generating an illustration from a description are generation tasks. Inputs need not be text: an image can guide editing, and audio can be transcribed before summarization. Supported media depend on the model and application, not on the generative label alone.

For a customer meeting invitation, a model can propose structure and wording, while the time must come from confirmed arrangements. Asking for a complete email can encourage it to fill in an unspecified address. Preserve missing fields rather than treating generated details as facts.

02

Generated content and search evidence serve different roles

Search finds existing material; generation organizes or creates output. A product can combine them by retrieving specifications and generating a comparison table. Even with citations, open the sources and verify individual conclusions rather than assuming a citation icon validates every field.

A classifier outputs a category while a generative model may also write an explanation, but that does not rank their reliability. A stable classifier may suffice to identify refund requests. A longer answer can add material needing review; choose the method for the required outcome.

03

Check facts and asset requirements before publication

Verify figures, names, and source support in text. Inspect visible lettering, anatomy, and product appearance in images. These are different checks: text-task performance does not establish image quality, and an untested example is not evidence of results.

NIST describes confidently generated false content as confabulation. Retain external evidence for important claims and allow an explicit insufficient-information result. Commercial use also depends on service terms and input permissions; generation itself does not perform those checks.
