What is GPT Image? Image generation, regional edits and API choices
GPT Image is OpenAI’s image generation and editing model family. Learn how it differs from ChatGPT and what to check for masked edits, transparent output and version selection.
Meet this model
GPT Image is OpenAI’s family of models for generating and editing images from text instructions and input pictures. ChatGPT can provide an interface to these capabilities, while the API integrates them into software. Model names, app plans and interfaces must be checked separately; the name GPT alone does not imply image generation.
Text-to-image generation and reference-image editing serve different tasks
An original event illustration can begin with a description of the subject and composition. For a new setting around an existing product photo, supply the photo and specify permissible changes. A reference supplies visual information; it does not automatically lock the product’s details.
The current GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst model page lists text and image input with image output. It does not generate video or audio. A clip with sound requires a video model, rather than treating an image response as a finished audiovisual asset.
Choose different interfaces for one-off edits and conversations
OpenAI offers the Image API for one-off generation or editing and an image generation tool in the Responses API for conversational revisions. First decide whether the software needs conversational context, then configure the main model and image tool according to current documentation.
A text reply in a conversation does not mean an image was saved. The integration must read the actual image output and write a file, decoding it when necessary. Follow-up edits should reference the existing result rather than send a new description detached from the image.
Inspect actual pixels for masks and transparency
A mask can indicate an editing region, but generative edits still require checking changes outside it. When replacing a shoe’s background, compare the laces and logo. An attractive overall result may still misrepresent the original product if details change.
The current guide supports transparent backgrounds with formats such as PNG or WebP. A checkerboard painted into an image does not establish transparency; inspect the downloaded alpha channel. Add headings separately when layout is strict, as text position and clarity can still be imperfect.
Recheck family versions and service eligibility over time
The reviewed guide now uses GPT Image 2.5. Older references to GPT Image 1 or 1.5 should not be treated automatically as current recommendations. Record the actual model or dated snapshot and compare the same reference set when upgrading to ensure output requirements still hold.
API access may require organization verification, and availability and quotas depend on the account and service conditions. This article checked the guide and model card without generating images or comparing speed. Hosted API access does not imply permission to download or redistribute model weights.
