What is hybrid search? Combining lexical and vector retrieval

Understand merged candidates, rank fusion, filters, and reranking through a product-code question, distinguishing hybrid methods from simple concatenation.

Our take

Understand the concept

Hybrid search combines retrieval signals, often lexical matching with vector similarity, so exact terms and paraphrases both contribute. It is not one fixed algorithm and can use rank fusion or other combinations. Benefits are not universal; deduplication, permissions, and factual verification remain necessary.

01

Exact identifiers and natural language contribute different signals

A query may include a product code and a natural-language connectivity problem. Lexical retrieval preserves the code while vectors bridge phrasing. Meaning alone can mix models; exact wording alone can miss paraphrases.

Azure and Pinecone describe differing combinations, such as parallel retrieval and fusion or lexical filtering before vector ranking. State the actual signals and process rather than relying only on the Hybrid label.

02

Fusion and reranking are different stages

Rank fusion can combine list positions, as in reciprocal rank fusion, rather than adding incompatible raw scores. Reranking further scores candidates. RRF is one fusion method, not a synonym for every hybrid approach or a replacement for retrieval.

Deduplicate by stable IDs while preserving sources. Multiple lists retrieving an old document do not make it current. Enforce dates and product scope through metadata or source checks rather than only asking generation to ignore invalid passages.

03

Compare individual and combined paths before adoption

Evaluate lexical, vector, and hybrid coverage on fixed code-based and paraphrased questions. This is a design without retrieval experiments. Extra irrelevant content calls for inspecting weights and candidates rather than assuming complexity means improvement.

Also check source-faithful generation and acceptable latency. Hybrid retrieval cannot fix wrong sources or access configuration. Preserve index and parameter versions to identify what a change actually affected.
