IDE versus CLI coding agents: the interface does not determine execution location

Compare navigation, terminal commands and diff review, check execution environments separately and assess effort on the same repository task.

Our take

Choose an approach

Consider IDE integration for continuous file and debugger inspection, and CLI for terminal-centered tasks. Both can expose similar capabilities or run in different environments. Verify working directories and tools. A command-line interface does not imply a local model, and an editor integration is not limited to completion.

01

Separate the interface from where execution happens

Codex documents CLI and IDE entry points, and GitHub supports CLI inside IDE terminals. One is not inherently a file editor and the other only chat. Selection context, diagnostics and debugger access depend on extensions and configuration. Model requests may go to a remote service even when files change locally. Record the editor, assistant version and workspace so model or machine differences are not mistaken for interface effects.

02

Use one repository to check navigation and execution

Start from one commit and identical error information, locate and fix the code through both entry points. Record file-reference effort, verify command directories and compare diffs. UI changes need actual page checks for both; terminal tests do not validate layout. Confirm environments before blaming an interface for failures, and distinguish network errors from code quality. Preserve failure output rather than relying only on chat descriptions.

03

Maintain recovery and review around team habits

CLI work needs clear directories and recovery; IDE work needs the correct project and reliable context references after extension updates. Preserve reviewable diffs and existing validation commands for both. Have a newcomer repeat the task and find results and rollback points before choosing a default. Include service fees and review effort. This article checks documentation without timing interfaces or presenting preferences as universal rankings.
