What is a large language model? From token prediction to summaries and answers
Learn how large language models use tokens and context, distinguish models from chat applications, and examine knowledge limits and verification through document Q&A.
Understand the concept
A large language model is a language model trained with substantial data and parameters for tasks such as generation, translation, and summarization. Common generative models predict subsequent tokens from context. Useful language representations do not make a model an always-current factual database. Chat products may add search and file tools; distinguish those aids from the model itself.
Tokens and context shape the next text
A token may be part of a word, a character, or punctuation; it is not universally one Chinese character. The model generates using the available context. Different supplied documents can change an answer without retraining the parameters.
For a short product-summary task, supply the full source and specify the restrictions that must remain. Without the source, a request for conclusions can lead the model to fill gaps from similar training patterns. Text resembling a specification does not establish that its model numbers or features exist.
Separate the model from chat-product features
Web search, file storage, and company-document access usually need application tools. A product may retrieve material before answering or validate formatting afterward. Successful product behavior does not establish that those supporting steps exist at another interface using the same model.
Image-capable systems may use a vision component or multimodal model; not every language model directly accepts images. File handling also varies between full-text extraction and passage retrieval. Inspect the actual input scope when investigating omitted details.
Compare capabilities on the actual task
Prepare separate summarization and Q&A examples and check their facts and formatting. Include a question absent from the source to test whether the model acknowledges missing information. A general benchmark rank cannot replace results on your terminology and document structure.
More parameters or a longer context window do not guarantee greater accuracy on every request. Record completion time and human correction effort as well. This page explains mechanisms rather than ranking tested models. Verify important citations against the original source, not the answer’s confidence.
