OCR pipelines versus vision models: separate text location from visual reasoning
Compare extracted text pipelines with direct visual understanding, checking numbers, coordinates and cross-region relationships in one document image.
Choose an approach
Consider OCR for line text and locations and vision models for chart or cross-region relationships. Combine text extraction with interpretation and verify against the original. Visual answers do not establish verbatim accuracy, and coordinates do not establish a reconstructed table. Validate target fields separately.
Line coordinates and full images supply different information
Microsoft text recognition returns lines and positions; OpenAI vision supports images with small-text and spatial limitations. OCR retains locatable intermediates and vision can use color and layout, but neither handles every layout perfectly. Line concatenation may scramble columns and direct vision may pair an amount with the wrong object. Identify source regions and field relationships before choosing.
Check fields and locations on the same page
Use a public page with headers and numbers and verified fields. Preserve OCR text and model answers, checking amounts, units and rows rather than number presence alone. Keep needed headers when cropping. Allow unreadable results for blurred areas instead of guessed structured values. No OCR or vision call or accuracy measurement occurred here; these checks distinguish recognition from relationship errors.
Preserve intermediate results for easier diagnosis
Maintain ordering and parsing for OCR, and image quality and model versions for vision. Replay columns and small text after updates. Include correction effort with fees. Fixed layouts may suit inspectable parsers; variable layouts may justify model assistance. Important conclusions still need source-image traceability. Neither removes review; use actual documents and tolerable errors to set scope.
