A recording is quiet or noisy: how can recognition be compared before and after volume adjustment?
For quiet or noisy recordings, establish whether intelligible speech exists before comparing gain and noise reduction. Amplification also increases noise, and aggressive denoising can remove speech detail.

For quiet or noisy recordings, establish whether intelligible speech exists before comparing gain and noise reduction. Amplification also increases noise, and aggressive denoising can remove speech detail. Preserve originals and compare the same passages with matching recognition settings. Taller waveforms or more text do not establish improved accuracy.
Preserve original audio and select representative quiet passages
This applies to distant speakers, quiet sentences skipped as silence and speech masked by wind. Select samples containing quiet speech, ordinary speech and noise and record positions rather than cherry-pick an easily improved sentence. Gain cannot recover speech absent because of clipping, packet loss or missing signal.
Separate low level, background noise and missing signal
Listen at a reasonable monitoring volume and inspect peaks and channel differences to distinguish low overall level from poor signal-to-noise ratio. Check whether voice detection classifies quiet speech as silence and verify encoding and sample rate. Do not assume all recognizers require manual amplification; some recommend original high-quality recordings.
Compare a small number of processed versions segment by segment
Keep an untreated baseline and apply limited gain or appropriate denoising only to copies, recording parameters. Listen for clipping, metallic artifacts and cut-off word endings before recognition with the same settings. Review names and numbers manually and consider a clearer original channel instead of mixing every channel and adding noise.
Check intelligibility and transcript content together
Compare target words annotated from original audio and count omissions, substitutions and newly introduced mistakes across complete passages. Check that processing did not remove genuine pauses or quiet speech. Improvement requires more reliable intelligibility and content. Greater volume, task success and changed confidence do not independently establish factual accuracy.
This article processed no private recording or called speech services and supplies no universal denoising setting or gain percentage. Results depend on source quality and platform recommendations. Keep unintelligible words uncertain. Improve recording conditions for important records; smoother generated details are not recovered original speech.
