Reasoning or general model: decide from task failures
Compare reasoning and general models on conditional analysis and rewriting, including thinking budgets, latency and evaluation examples.
Choose an approach
Evaluate reasoning models for interdependent conditions and intermediate conclusions. Establish a general-model baseline for clearly specified rewriting or classification. Reasoning capability and model size are different dimensions, and some products offer thinking settings. Record the actual version and configuration.
Additional thinking changes execution
Google documents additional processing and thinking controls for supported models, with model-specific limits. Extra computation can support problem solving, but explanation steps are not guaranteed correct and displayed reasoning length is not a quality metric.
OpenAI frames selection around task accuracy, latency and cost. Rewriting a simple description and deriving a schedule from constraints need different processing. Classify failures before increasing reasoning effort.
Evaluate reasoning and routine tasks separately
Prepare constraint problems with known answers and check every constraint. Separately evaluate rewrites for factual preservation. Report categories separately so one improved reasoning task does not hide slower routine work.
Hold context and grading criteria fixed while varying reasoning settings. Do not add budget merely for longer explanations once a simpler configuration passes. Missing evidence must remain explicit; more thinking cannot supply unavailable facts.
Check whether the extra waiting is worthwhile
Record time to a usable result and retain failures. Thinking can use additional computation or tokens; check current billing for the selected service. A demo’s speed does not establish costs on your documents, especially across short and long inputs.
If benefits are limited to a difficult subset, route that subset to a reasoning model and keep the existing solution elsewhere. Retain reference cases through rule and model updates. These are documentation-based evaluation steps, not a reported experiment.
