Speech-to-speech versus cascaded voice: interaction and inspectability differ
Compare direct voice sessions with transcription-reasoning-synthesis pipelines, testing interruptions, intermediate text and complete responses.
Choose an approach
Consider speech-to-speech for continuous interaction and cascades when text inspection or component replacement matters. Direct voice can still expose text, and cascades are not universally slower. Fix the dialogue goal and validate understanding, tool results, final speech and stale actions after interruptions.
Direct sessions and staged processing expose different controls
OpenAI documents voice sessions and cascaded paths. Cascades separate recognition, text processing and synthesis for intermediate inspection; Realtime combines audio, reasoning and tools in one session. Actual features depend on models and connections, so architecture does not establish latency. Transcripts may lose prosody and direct audio can misread references. Check critical fields before actions, especially numbers, rather than letting natural conversation conceal bad arguments.
Add interruptions and corrections to the same dialogue
Use dialogues with known answers, then correct a number mid-utterance. Preserve stage text in cascades and available events and final content in direct voice. Check fields, stopped playback and separately handled tool actions after interruption. Hearing a reply does not establish business completion. Measure from finished speech to a usable reply rather than only the first audio chunk. No voice system or latency benchmark was built here.
Validate component changes and session recovery
Cascades allow component replacement but require format and interface integration; direct sessions need connection, turn and tool-result handling. Replay correction and interruption cases after upgrades to detect mismatched replies and actions. Count repeated recognition and cancellations, not just spoken length. Add explicit text checkpoints where required without categorically rejecting direct voice. Adopt according to observed interaction and recoverable results.
