AI upscaling versus interpolation: sharper details may be invented
Compare generative super-resolution with conventional resampling on one low-resolution original, checking text and texture rather than treating more pixels as recovered facts.
Choose an approach
Start with interpolation for resizing while preserving existing content. Evaluate AI upscaling for natural-texture appearance. AI can invent details unconfirmed by the source, so apparent clarity is not factual recovery. Check text and product structure against originals and trusted references, retaining the source rather than treating enlarged output as new evidence.
Resampling and generated texture change images differently
Pillow resampling filters compute a new size from existing pixels, whereas Diffusers super-resolution also generates content using a model. AI methods differ; one diffusion upscaler does not represent all tools. Interpolation can soften edges, while generation may turn blurred characters into crisp incorrect text. Evaluate dimensions separately from fidelity, especially identifiers and small marks; sharper thumbnails alone are insufficient.
Inspect local differences at identical output dimensions
Keep an original without repeated compression and produce equal-sized outputs for inspection at the same scale. Check text, thin lines and natural texture against trusted material. With a high-resolution reference, downsample and upscale for comparison; without one, mark uncertain details. Do not add sharpening to only one result and attribute differences to its algorithm. No upscaler was run here and no clarity ranking is reported.
Preserve settings and correction effort for the intended use
A web illustration and a fact-sensitive document permit different changes. Record dimensions and model versions so usable outputs remain traceable. Include retries, local repairs and text checking; inspect interpolation at the final display size too. If source text is unreadable, seek a clearer source or typeset it rather than accepting guessed characters. Preserve source-output correspondence for recovery.
