What is code explanation? Checking AI descriptions against actual behavior
Understand code reading through missing and zero values, including inputs, outputs, callers, side effects, and differences between comments, intent, and implementation.
Understand the concept
Code explanation describes structure and behavior, including inputs, outputs, and side effects. AI can infer nonexistent behavior from names or comments. Match explanations to a specific implementation and evidence rather than fluent prose, and do not expand a request for explanation into editing authorization.
Start from locatable code and trace inputs and outputs
In Python, if value treats both zero and None as false, while a requirement may treat only None as missing. Saying only “filters empty values” hides the difference. Describe the condition before judging requirement alignment.
GitHub recommends tracing one feature through files and acknowledges incomplete explanations. Request function and branch references, then inspect the source. This page does not claim to have read a reader’s project or benchmarked a product.
Trace callers and side effects beyond one function
A function can write files or call networks before returning. Inspect exceptions and shared state too. Callers may transform arguments, invalidating isolated assumptions. Identify needed context rather than invent it.
Comments can be stale and documentation aspirational. Record conflicts rather than blend them into one account. Verify dependency behavior against the version in use rather than old model recollection.
State the scope of read-only review and execution
Trace a branch statically, then run a minimal example in an authorized test environment if appropriate. Label unexecuted conclusions as code-reading inferences. Do not invoke real external writes solely to verify prose; use mocks or isolation.
Useful explanations point to evidence and preserve unknown dependencies and boundaries. Define editing goals and validation separately. Explanations aid understanding rather than prove correctness or replace test records.
Checked sources
These sources support the concepts and methods described here. Examples and test scope are labeled separately; check the version of the tools you use.
