Doubao commonly refers to a chat app and also appears in Volcengine Ark model-service names. This article distinguishes the app, general Seed models, Seedream and Seedance, and explains how to choose a specific version.

Doubao is a name used for ByteDance-related AI applications and model services. For consumers, it commonly means the Doubao chat app. For developers, IDs such as doubao-seed in the Volcengine Ark catalog identify model services for integration. General Seed models differ from Seedream image generation and Seedance video generation. Separating app functions into models and tools helps determine which service your own software needs.
How the chat product and developer interfaces differ
Doubao’s user agreement describes a service centered on AI conversation that may combine other models or services. Search and file-processing features in the app therefore need not come from a single language model. Developers integrating Volcengine Ark must choose a catalog model and handle tool outputs; putting “Doubao” into a request does not reproduce the app.
The app agreement places explicit limits on uses of generated content and states that answers may be inaccurate even when search sources are shown. Before integrating article-writing into a product, check the applicable terms for the enterprise API being used. Generating text in a consumer app does not establish unrestricted commercial permission or rights to quoted material.
Choose between Seed and image or video models
The official Seed2.1 introduction covers general agents and code engineering, with document-processing and visual-understanding examples. The Volcengine Ark catalog on October 20, 2026 lists specific IDs such as doubao-seed-2-1-pro-260915, including tool calling and structured output. Visual understanding does not replace Seedream image generation or Seedance video generation.
To produce an inventory description from a product photo, select a general model with image input and check the product code and color. To redraw a product poster, use an image-generation model and separately check whether the image preserves the real product’s features. Both use images, but extraction and new-image generation need different evaluations.
Specific model IDs and update behavior matter
The catalog marks doubao-seed-evolving as a rapidly iterating model and separately lists dated versions. Record the full model ID when comparing changes across an upgrade. Context and request limits differ, so a million-token window for one model should not be copied as the specification of every Doubao model.
Volcengine Ark also marks older models as approaching retirement, which matters when maintaining existing projects. Compare extraction errors on the same product material instead of judging business results from provider showcases alone.
