What is least privilege? Limiting AI-tool access to the task
Understand identity, data scope, actions, read-only tools, temporary access, and revocation through an inventory assistant, without relying on prompts as access control.
Understand the concept
Least privilege grants only the access and actions needed for a task, scoped to resources and duration. Inventory queries do not require product deletion, and one-file access does not require directory-wide reading. Identity systems and tools must enforce this principle rather than a prompt restraining an all-powerful account.
Scope identity, actions, and resources separately
An inventory assistant can use a dedicated identity limited to a warehouse query interface. An administrator account can expose excessive capabilities even behind a query-only UI. NIST emphasizes minimum authorization, and Google IAM guidance discourages broad roles.
Make resource boundaries concrete, such as project files rather than all user directories. Validate paths against traversal and link-related escapes. Instructions not to read other material guide behavior but do not enforce filesystem isolation.
Duration and credential handling affect effective scope
Long-lived write access may be unnecessary after a temporary task. Use time-limited credentials or task-scoped capabilities where supported and define revocation. A log saying revoked does not establish that target permissions changed.
Credentials should not be placed in prompts or public configuration. Models usually need query capability, not the password itself. Tool-held credentials and scope checks reduce exposure, while returned content still needs inspection for accidental leakage.
Verify boundaries with allowed and denied cases
In a test environment, check an allowed query, an out-of-scope warehouse, and a write action. This is a validation design without real permission changes. A successful normal query alone does not prove denied actions are blocked.
Reassess access when tasks change instead of permanently accumulating permissions. Audit identity and actions without logging full credentials. Least privilege limits impact rather than guaranteeing error-free models; factual output still needs separate checks.
