What is a system prompt? Global behavior instructions versus ordinary messages

Understand system prompts through support scope restrictions, including role boundaries, provider naming differences, and why prompts do not enforce permissions.

Our take

Understand the concept

A system prompt usually sets application-level assistant behavior through designated fields or high-priority messages. Providers differ in naming and hierarchy; some interfaces also use developer messages. It is not merely a user saying “you are an expert,” and it cannot replace programmatic authorization or approval for external actions.

01

Place instructions in the interface-defined location

A support assistant may be instructed to explain public return policies and acknowledge missing order data. Put stable rules in the designated instruction field and questions in user messages. Writing “system” inside text does not automatically change its role or priority.

Google exposes system_instruction, while OpenAI distinguishes roles including developer and user. Check the model and interface rather than assuming system messages transfer unchanged across providers. This explains mechanisms without benchmarking instruction adherence.

02

Instructions inside references should not gain equal authority

Uploaded files may contain attempts to override rules; treat them as data. Prompts can describe boundaries but models can still be influenced. Programs accessing or modifying orders must verify permissions and arguments rather than executing because a model claims authorization.

System prompts are not vaults for passwords. They enter model processing. Prevent unauthorized access at the data layer instead of supplying restricted information and relying on a promise not to reveal it.

03

Check instruction continuity when updating conversation state

Interfaces may retain per-turn instructions differently from history. Linking a previous response does not guarantee every requirement persists. OpenAI documents that instructions apply only to the current response request; verify how necessary rules are carried forward.

Use fixed cases with conflicting requests and missing information to check scope after updates. This is a validation method, not an authorization test or a guarantee of prompt security. Clear instructions help behavior, while the application enforces action boundaries.
