Local versus cloud coding agents: reproduce the dependency environment first
Compare execution in an existing workspace with a remote isolated environment, checking dependencies, uncommitted files and result retrieval for one repair.
Choose an approach
Consider local execution for machine-specific dependencies or uncommitted material, and cloud agents for reproducible repository tasks suited to asynchronous work. Local execution may call a cloud model, while cloud environments do not automatically contain all local files. Define the starting code and dependencies, then validate retrieved changes in the target environment.
Different starting states change task visibility
GitHub’s cloud agent uses an ephemeral environment and can create branches and pull requests; Codex cloud also uses task environments. This differs from an existing local directory. Uncommitted fixes or generated resources may not reach the cloud, so verify the starting commit. Local directories can hide stale dependencies that prevent clean reproduction. Record runtime versions in both; location alone establishes neither correct dependencies nor reproducibility.
Check builds and retrieved diffs from one commit
Use a permitted copy at one commit with identical failure inputs, recording dependency installation and actual test execution. Validate retrieved cloud changes on the target machine for files left only in temporary storage. Try a clean dependency build locally to expose cache dependence. Separate environment setup from code work so downloads are not called model latency. Keep hardware-specific behavior explicitly unverified until checked on the target device.
Include environment maintenance and task recovery
Local work requires managing machine load and workspace conflicts; cloud work requires reproducible setup and result synchronization. Remote tasks can feed local integration when edit boundaries are clear. Preserve task identifiers and output to distinguish code failures from unprepared environments. Count retries and result retrieval alongside fees. This documentation review created no cloud tasks and measured no build success rate; replay a complete workflow on your repository before adoption.
