What is a multi-turn conversation? History, current responses, and state
Understand conversation history, server-managed state, and persistent memory through an evolving travel plan, including corrections, references, and context limits.
Understand the concept
A multi-turn conversation contains successive user-assistant exchanges using history provided by an application or retained by a service. State may be supplied as messages or linked through conversation or response identifiers. It is not permanent recall or per-turn parameter training. Check how the interface and application carry history into each request.
A follow-up can depend on earlier context
After requesting a two-day itinerary, extending it to three days, and excluding museums on day two, the last instruction depends on prior plans. Without those plans and changes, the assistant may invent continuity.
This illustrates conversation design without generating travel recommendations. Change a premise and inspect whether later responses retain outdated conditions. Distinguish user corrections from earlier assistant guesses rather than treating unconfirmed responses as facts.
Message lists and server-managed state are different implementations
OpenAI supports conversation-state management, and Google Interactions can continue from a previous interaction identifier. These mechanisms carry context but do not remove capacity limits. Check interface requirements and retention rules for the chosen approach.
Applications maintaining history must preserve roles and order, avoiding treating tool results as user authorization. Pruning should retain active constraints and unresolved questions. Sending only the latest question may remove context essential to understanding it.
Verify persistent memory separately from current dialogue
Continuity after reopening depends on application storage, not the term multi-turn. Visible history does not establish that the model received all records. Inspect identifiers and inputs, then check concrete earlier conditions for correct continuation.
Long conversations may need summaries or retrieval, and omissions can alter later responses. Request missing premises when context is unclear. This page explains state management without claiming unlimited memory or reporting a stress test.
