What is open source AI? Why available weights alone are not enough
Use the OSI definition to examine materials needed for use and modification, distinguish code from weights, and learn how to inspect licenses, training code, and data information.
Understand the concept
Open source AI needs an identified definition. Under OSI’s Open Source AI Definition 1.0, users receive freedoms to use, study, modify, and share a system and the materials needed to modify it. Downloadable weights alone do not establish compliance. Inspect the license and materials rather than treating an open-source label as permission.
Identify the definition being used
OSI lists requirements for data information, training and runtime code, and parameters. Data information does not mean publishing every raw training item, but it must sufficiently inform a skilled person building a substantially equivalent system. Read the full requirements rather than checking only for released weights.
Projects and organizations can use the label differently, so identify the standard behind a claim. This page explains OSI’s definition without certifying a model from a news summary or treating a definition as a substitute for actual license terms.
Inspect the different materials in a model repository
Suppose a repository provides weights and an inference example but no training code or data information. That establishes a download and runtime entry point, not compliance with the stated open source AI definition. Open-source inference code and an open-source model system are different claims.
After reading a model card’s license field, open the actual text. A custom license may contain terms not conveyed by its short name. For modification or redistribution, inspect the licenses of the relevant materials rather than assuming one code license covers every repository file.
Record availability and permission separately
Successful execution establishes that the files work in one environment, not permission for every use. Describe exactly what is available, such as downloadable weights or public training code, and identify missing materials instead of compressing different states into one label.
Licenses and released materials can change. Record the date and repository version for later checks. This page does not certify or benchmark a model; use the inspection sequence to examine project claims and consult the actual terms for the intended activity.
