What is an open-weight model? What to check after downloading weights

Understand what open weights provide, distinguish downloading and execution from open-source permission, and examine tokenizers, quantized versions, and model cards.

Our take

Understand the concept

An open-weight model makes trained weights available, usually for execution in a user-controlled environment with the required software. This does not establish access to all training data or code or compliance with an open source AI definition. Check the actual license and compatible architecture, tokenizer, and runtime. Availability and permission for an intended use are separate questions.

01

Weights are one part of a runnable model

Weights contain learned values that runtime code applies using the architecture. Language models commonly also need a matching tokenizer and configuration. Copying one large file may not create a complete restorable package. Retain the required companion materials and versions according to the repository instructions.

For a quantized model on a laptop, verify runtime format support and the original base model. Similar names do not establish identical chat templates. After loading, test a short input for usable content and correct formatting, not just a successful load message.

02

Open weights and open-source permission are different

Some projects provide weights under additional use conditions; others publish inference code while requiring an application for weights. Describe the materials and access method separately. A public repository does not establish unrestricted use or redistribution of all its files.

OSI’s open source AI definition requires additional materials suitable for modification, so open weights are not sufficient. Follow the model-card license field to the actual terms. Free-download or community labels do not establish permission for every purpose.

03

Validate restoration and the actual local task

In a separate directory, record the file list, checksums, and runtime version. This helps distinguish missing files from configuration changes on another machine. These are preparation steps, not model test results. Compare quantized variants on the same real task.

Local execution depends on memory and context length; download size is not a direct runtime-memory requirement. Verify complete output on a small input before adding longer documents. Running the model locally does not establish that every supporting tool is offline; inspect actual calls.
